If someone comments on your posts or replies to your emails, do you know how to turn that engagement into a real conversation—and maybe even a hot lead? If not, this episode of the Heart-Centred Business Podcast is absolutely for you. I saw just how many people were struggling with this at a Virtual Conference earlier this year, and I ended up coming up with a little framework on the fly that’s already helping people turn casual chatter into actual leads. Let’s get into how to nurture those relationships and spot the folks who are ready to work with you!

Why Most People Miss Hot Leads in Their Replies

You’ve probably heard the advice: reply to every comment on your socials. Most people know that. But what surprised me was how many people, when they get a comment like, “This was really helpful,” just respond with “Thanks so much” or drop an emoji. That’s it. No further conversation, and sometimes, a complete dead end. The awkwardness comes because people don’t know what to say—or worry it’ll feel too salesy, too soon.

What’s worse? When you do reply like that, you’re actually closing down a conversation you could be opening up. Plenty of business owners told me they just felt stuck, not knowing how to keep the chat going without feeling awkward or pushy.

So, at Virtual Conference, I made up a simple structure on the spot. Since then, people have reported turning commenters into leads using that exact outline. And that’s what this episode is all about.

Let’s jump into this practical episode…

Why You Shouldn’t Be Afraid of Conversations

Let’s talk about why we need some structure here. Remember in “Wolf of Wall Street” (or, honestly, any ‘80s or ‘90s sales job interview) where they’d ask you to “sell me this pen”? Old school sales would have you immediately pitching the pen, listing off the benefits whether the person even wants it or not.

But actually, good sales is about asking questions. Qualifying questions are everything! Do they need a pen? What’s wrong with their current one? Good sales is about understanding the buyer before you even make an offer.

If someone’s engaging with your content, it’s not their job to go wandering through your website, finding your sales page and seeking you out. It’s your job to nurture and invite—to make the next step clear and relevant for them.

The Business Case for Relationship-Centred Sales

Maybe you’re thinking, “Tash, I only want to share on social media and let people find me if they want to.” I get it! But hear me out:

When I run a live launch—let’s say with a webinar—my conversion rate lands between three and seven percent. And it’s not magic; it’s because I engage, I qualify, I talk to people. If you skip those steps and just hope folks buy after reading your stuff, your conversion rate could easily be 0.2% to 1%. So to make the same number of sales, I’d need five or even ten times the leads.

Audience growth is expensive and time-consuming. It’s much more efficient to nurture the people already here—and honestly, conversations with real people bring me so much joy! I’d rather have high connection and high conversion any day.

Even for those who want a more hands-off model, adding a splash of thoughtful follow-up massively boosts those conversion rates. Why not make your marketing efforts count for more instead of just spending countless hours (and dollars) chasing more “reach”?

How to Actually Engage Well: The VIA Framework

Here’s where that structure comes in. If you get a comment on social media, someone replies to an email, or DMs you, the VIA framework keeps you from falling back on the awkward “thank you!” and helps you actually deepen the relationship.

VIA stands for: Validate, Inform, and Ask.

1. Validate

Start by validating their comment. If someone says, “That tip was so helpful!” reply with something like, “Yes! I’m so happy it helped—writing the letter A really neatly is important, it shows up everywhere.”

2. Inform

Add something that centers your expertise—share a little insight, a relevant detail, or something you see with your clients. For example: “Actually, the letter A is something most of my clients struggle with when we start working together.”

3. Ask

Then, add a qualifying question that actually moves the conversation forward. “Are there any other letters you struggle with?” Suddenly, it’s not just polite chit-chat—it’s a real chat about where they’re at and what support they might need.

Bad VS Good Replies: The Commenter’s Perspective

A lot of people default to, “What did you find helpful?” or “What will you implement?” when someone leaves a kind comment. But honestly, that kind of question is homework for the commenter! It makes them less likely to keep engaging—because the focus is all on you collecting intel, not actually helping them.

When you use VIA, your question is centred on their experience, not yours, and you’re showing genuine interest.

Tweaking VIA for Different Types of Comments

Not all comments are thank-yous. Sometimes people comment something like, “Wow, that looks great!” on an offer post, or, “I’ve really been meaning to check that out.” And so many people either just say, “Thanks, let me know if you want it,” or they say nothing at all.

Here’s the thing: those people could be leads. Ignoring them or fobbing them off with a canned response is a fast way to lose out on opportunities.

If you want more engagement and to beat the algorithm, the best place to start is by replying thoughtfully to the comments you already have. The fastest way to dry up new leads? Ignore the warm ones you’ve got.

Let’s run through a few different business types and questions to see how VIA would work.

Parenting Example:

Let’s say you’re a parenting coach and ask your audience, “What’s the number one time you struggle to keep your cool with your kids?” Someone replies, “When I’ve asked six times and they still don’t do it.”

  • Validate: “Oh yes, that’s such a big one. It’s so frustrating, especially when you’re trying to do it in a gentle, loving way.”
  • Inform: “One thing I see with clients is that they rarely need to ask six times after we work on building their child’s independence.”
  • Ask: “What kinds of things do you find yourself repeating most often?”
This not only sparks a richer conversation, but people are much more likely to DM you for more help or say, “Yes, please help me!”

Money Mindset Example:

Maybe you’re giving money mindset advice and someone comments, “Well, that’s all well and good, but I don’t make enough to start looking after my money.”

  • Validate: “Yep, I totally get it—you can only stretch each dollar so far.”
  • Inform: “I’ve found with my clients that the sooner you can find even tiny ways to feel abundant at your current income level, the faster you start to shift things.”
  • Ask: “Are there any practices or moments right now that help you feel abundant, even if it’s just a little?”

Messaging Example:

You’re a messaging expert sharing a framework, and someone asks, “Does this work for parenting, or only business-to-business?”

  • Validate: “Ooh, great question! Yes, it works for parenting too.”
  • Inform: Give an example of using your framework for a parenting topic, right then in the comment thread. That shines a light on your expertise for everyone reading.
  • Ask: “Which part of your messaging do you struggle with the most?”

What Happens When You Start Using VIA

I see it every time I use VIA—people reply in detail, they DM me, they’re keen to keep talking. If they’re not ready, you’ve at least gotten a meaningful conversation instead of a conversation killer. And if they are ready? You’ve built trust and shown expertise at exactly the right time. You spot the hot leads without ever being pushy.

It’s Your Job—And It Gets Easier

As business owners, it’s on us to take these conversations further. Not every reply will be the same, but the more mindful you are, the easier—and more powerful—it becomes.

And if you’re ever stuck for how to reply or want some templates and specifics, check out my program, Skyrocket Sales. That program goes deeper on the whole sales process, including consent-based marketing, qualifying questions, and how to build relationships that actually convert.

I hope you’ll try the VIA framework next time someone slides into your comments or replies to your email. Just remember: so many people spend way too much time and money on reach, when a richer relationship with your high-engagement audience will skyrocket your results. If you’re focused on growing your list but not nurturing your leads, you’re working way harder than you need to.

Until next time, I cannot WAIT to see you SHINE.
