Ever felt like your business just can’t be niched? Maybe you’ve been around for a while and your offers now sprawl across all sorts of topics, or maybe you’re just getting started but the thought of putting yourself in a box makes you want to run? I call this the “un-niche-able” dilemma, and you’re not alone when it comes to niching.
Today on the Heart-Centred Business Podcast, I want to make niching feel waaaay less restricting and, honestly, a whole lot more helpful (if you actually need it at all).
And stick around because, in true #Tashmas style, there’s a little gift for you at the end.
Wait… What is #Tashmas?
I do it for both my birthday (1-12 March) and pre-Christmas (1-12 December) every year! Every day from now until my birthday on 12th March, there will be a new daily podcast episode, with a hot tip or practical strategy as per usual… but you ALSO get a gift! I love sharing the birthday vibes, and what better way to do that?! The daily gift could be a freebie, a special offer, a competition… but there will be something for YOU every single day.
Let’s dive in!

Let’s Talk About the “Un-Niche-Able” Feeling
No matter where you are in business, “niching” can bring up all sorts of resistance. Maybe you’ve been doing your thing for ages and now your messaging covers heaps of different audiences and offers. Or you’re new in business, bursting with creativity (and ideas for days), and you can’t stand the thought of narrowing yourself to just one area.
Sometimes it comes from loving what you do so much that you want to help absolutely EVERYONE. Suddenly, every conversation about niching feels like someone’s trying to put you in a cage. You don’t have to feel boxed in! Here’s how I see it: being the “un-nicheable” just means you haven’t found a style of niching that fits you… yet.
What Does “Niche” Actually Mean?
“Your niche” is simply the type of person you focus on when you’re marketing. That’s it! It’s not about restricting what you can create or who you can help, and it’s definitely not about who you’re allowed to work with.
The first common question is: “Do I have to niche?” And my answer? Nope! You don’t have to niche if things are working for you as they are.
Do You Really Need a Niche?
Let’s keep it real. If you’re loving how your business is growing, and you’re happy with your audience, lead generation, and sales, there’s no need to force yourself into a niche just because “the online business world” says so.
You might not need to be super-specific in your marketing if:
- You have a big marketing budget and can advertise broadly.
- Your work is location-based and there are only a handful of providers in your region.
- Your brand is built around YOU (think: content creators, influencers, blogging personalities), and people follow you for your stories and way of sharing, not just your offers.
In certain businesses, especially those centred on you as a person, you’ll naturally attract people who just “click” with your vibe and repel those who don’t—and that’s a kind of niche in itself!
But, If You Want More Traction…
If your content isn’t resonating, your message isn’t landing, you’re not getting the leads or sales you want… OR you want your marketing to spotlight your clients as the “main character” (not just you), niching might be the simplest, most effective lever to pull.
Why? Because when your niche is clear, your messaging gets SO much easier to write.
You can create specific, grounded examples—even if you’re offering something broad like a flexible modality. Specificity in your messaging makes it land. And the best part? You don’t even have to publicly declare your niche. I don’t walk around telling everyone exactly who’s in my niche, and most people never know the details behind it. You’ll know you’re in my niche because my content, my offers, my vibe just feel like they’re made for you.
How to Niche Without Feeling Boxed In
Niching isn’t about squeezing yourself into a tiny corner. It’s about choosing a group to focus on for right now. You’re not closing the doors to anyone or announcing that certain people aren’t welcome. You’re simply putting your attention on a subset of humans you most want to attract as clients.
That means building your marketing and offers to speak directly TO that person, not just about them.
Getting Specific: Find Your “Big Three”
If you’re feeling super allergic to niching, or have no idea where to start, here’s what I recommend. This is my super-simple, un-cagey, “put your energy where it works” guide:
1. Pick One Demographic
You don’t have to choose them all. Just one. Maybe it’s just their gender identity, whether they work for themselves or for someone else, their age, their parenting status, or something else that’s meaningful to your marketing.
Example: If you help parents, you could focus all your stories and examples on parents who work full-time. Your strategies may help all parents, but your messaging lands stronger with those juggling jobs and drop-offs.
2. Pick One Psychographic
Think about what’s going on in their head. What do they want? Where are they stuck? What do they dream of fixing? Just pick one desire or challenge.
3. Pick One “Sensographic”
I made this word up, but basically: what can they see, hear, feel, touch, or taste that reminds them they haven’t reached that goal or solved that challenge? What’s the real world, tangible, can’t-miss-it barrier in their life?
Here’s the important bit: All three of these should be in THEIR words. Think how your clients would describe themselves and their struggles—not how we would academically cut it up.
An Example: Parenting Niche in Action
Say you help parents with their confidence. Big, universal topic, right? But if your dream client is a mum working 9-to-5, she might be facing time guilt, worried she’s missing out on the key moments, and stressed about how daycare or other caregivers affect her child. Those specifics shape your stories and examples. Swap it, and you’re talking to a stay-at-home parent? Completely different worries, totally different messaging—even if the tools you teach stay the same.
Niching isn’t about who you can help, it’s about how you talk to the people you want to help NOW.
Don’t Want to Niche? You Don’t Have To!
It’s absolutely fine to skip niching, especially if you’ve got established reach, a hearty ad budget, or you just want to show up as you and let the right people find you. As your business grows, you’ll often naturally get a little broader and less hyper-specific.
But if you hit a plateau, you might find a little re-niching is exactly what you need to get momentum going again. In the last couple of years, I’ve helped established businesses narrow in temporarily to get their message cutting through again—sometimes for just 6-12 months—and the improvement in leads and sales is always spectacular.
The Real Magic: Turning Niche Decisions Into Messaging
The critical step so many people miss is this: Don’t just tell your audience who you help—SHOW them you get it.
Don’t start posting everywhere, “I help women entrepreneurs who want to go from six figures to seven” and think that’s enough to connect. I see this a lot. What people really need is to see that you understand their specific roadblocks, thoughts, and what keeps them up at night. The power isn’t just in demographic targeting; it’s in describing the lived experience, the micro-moments, and the real why of their challenges.
For instance: “Yoghurt for busy stressed women” on the shelf might catch my eye, but unless you tell me why it matters, why it’s for ME, and how it’s actually going to help, it doesn’t mean I’ll buy it.
