One of the things I absolutely love about my business is the huge variety of people I get to meet. So many different personalities, business strategies, niches, and ways of showing up. Everyone has their own perspective on service and the gap they want to fill. It’s why it’s so frustrating to see people stuck on doing their marketing the same way as everyone else, and struggling to make their marketing strategy work for them.

The truth is: your choice of marketing strategy needs to be as unique as you are. So, in today’s episode of the Heart-Centred Business Podcast, we’re diving into how you can make marketing actually fit YOU — because business gets really fun when your strategy is designed around who you are.

Let’s dive in!

Learning From Others… But Making it Your Own

I’ve learned so much from other people, and there are a ton of smart business owners in the world. People have come up with all sorts of creative ways to grow audiences, nurture leads, and make sales. There are even businesses and services out there I didn’t know existed — solutions to problems I hadn’t thought of.

But every strategy, model, and tip I hear has to pass through a filter: is this a good fit for me? Not just for my business, but for me as a human. I think this is the piece that’s missing for a lot of people in business. We’re so quick to adopt what someone else is doing, but rarely stop to ask, “Will this actually work for me?”

Knowing Your Superpowers (And Using Them!)

Take me, for example. Connecting is my superpower. People are shocked by how much I remember about their businesses — especially my Take Off program folks, mentoring clients, and VIPs. Even inside the Heart-Centred, Soul-Driven Entrepreneurs Facebook community, people would be amazed by how much I remembered about everyone.

I actually have face blindness, so I don’t always remember faces, but I lock in on names and what people do. It comes naturally for me! Knowing that, there are certain types of automation tools that just don’t fit my strengths. Sure, automation has helped grow my business, but I’m super selective about where I use it.

I would never use something like ManyChat or bot automations for DM conversations on social media — because those chats really light me up. Chatting directly with people is in my zone of genius and often turns into hot leads. Plus, those bot conversations have never made me feel the way a real, human conversation does.

Because I know this about myself, I don’t get FOMO when everyone else is raving about a new social media chatbot or the latest AI tool. I don’t even feel the urge to dig into how it works. Knowing myself and my superpowers gives me the headspace to stay focused on what actually works for me, without worrying that I’m missing out. It helps that I’ve been in business a while — I’ve tried chasing the shiny new thing, and often, it’s just a distraction.

Keeping Your Foundations Solid (Even as Trends Change)

The core foundations of my business and marketing strategy haven’t changed since the day I started. Details have been tweaked, the algorithms have shifted, and the split between organic and paid growth has evolved. But those foundations are built to fit me perfectly.

Here’s why: I want to enjoy this. I want to be energised by most of what I do (not dreading it). So, I encourage you — look at your superpowers, your personality, what energises you and what drains you. Build your marketing to match those things, not just your delivery.

I could run an eight-hour workshop on niching and be excited to do it again the next day. But I’m not about to hand off the parts of my business that bring me the most joy — writing, creating, speaking, and connecting with others. Why would I outsource that?

Pick Your Tech (And Tasks) Wisely

That said, I just said yes to beta testing Xero’s AI bookkeeping tool. If AI can figure out my expenses so I don’t have to trawl through admin and justify business purchases, sign me up for that! Admin work like reconciling transactions is soul-destroying for me — so automating that feels amazing.

But when it comes to communicating and connecting with my audience, it will be a long time before I hand that over to AI. That would be totally counterintuitive for me.

You Can Make (Almost) Any Strategy Work — But Should You?

All these marketing strategies can work. Truly. As a business strategist and marketing nerd, I know I could technically make just about anything fit. But if I copy someone else’s model step by step, it probably won’t work as well as something built around me — and that’s true for you, too.

If training up an AI excites you because you don’t enjoy connecting with humans, brilliant! That’s where knowing yourself comes in. I’m obsessed with self-knowledge — I look at myself from all angles and, recently, I even updated my “About Me” page with all my personality test results. Most of them just confirmed what I already knew: I love personal connection, and I’ve curated my business around that.

Matching Strategy to Your Human-ness

Maybe for you, it’s not about live webinars or lots of video. For me, I prefer webinars and teaching live, being with people in real time, bouncing off their energy, and answering questions. But I know a lot of my audience wants pre-recorded courses, too, so I look for ways to bring my live energy into those offerings — through live support calls inside self-study programs, challenges, webinars, livestreams, and so on. That way, even “passive” offers still feel engaging for me.

If you think “I can’t do webinars,” ask yourself why. Maybe you don’t like teaching for free when no one buys at the end — but if you were paid $2,000 an hour, would you be excited to run a webinar? If the answer is yes, it’s not really about webinars; it’s probably a sales or marketing alignment issue, not the delivery method. Maybe your webinar isn’t converting because of the topic or the people it attracts, not because webinars themselves are the problem.

Don’t Strip Out Your Own Magic

A lot of people end up draining the joy and brilliance out of their business by trying to follow the “proven system” to the letter. In pursuit of being “advanced,” making more money, or mimicking a famous mentor, they lose their own unique magic — the perspective, the expertise, and the voice that only they can offer.

Why did you start this business? Probably to earn good money, yes, but also to create something you love. If you end up with a job you can’t stand, what’s the point? If you have to mask who you truly are, or feel like you must act more like someone else every day, your strategies are misaligned.

Unmasking Yourself in Your Marketing

When you step into business ownership, there’s a lot of unlearning to do. In corporate, we’re often taught to mask, to conform, to smooth our rough edges and fit in. It can feel risky or even unsafe to show up as your true self — but your business gives you the freedom to do just that.

It can feel brave to say, “Hey, I’m more introverted — how could I make this work for me?” or, “I love connecting; is there a way to weave that in?” Not every mentor is open to these conversations, but it’s worth seeking advice from those who are.

Get Curious About What Drains (Or Energises) You

Here’s my gentle challenge: interrogate which parts of your marketing and sales actually feel tough. Is it all of social media, or just parts? If a certain task suddenly brought you $50k a month, would you still dread it, or would it feel easier? Sometimes, things drain us only when we feel our effort is wasted. If you still don’t enjoy it — even when it’s working — that’s a sign you need to find another way to achieve the same result that suits YOU.

You might just land on a totally unique, totally YOU marketing strategy that works far better, and brings you way more joy.

Create Resonant Messaging

One thing I talked about in this episode is that it’s not enough to simply say you want to attract action-takers — your messaging has to actually call them in.
