This episode of the Heart-Centred Business Podcast is a bit out of the box, as I originally sent this as a long-form love note to my mailing list on April 7th.

That email had the highest response rate of any of my emails in the last three years. One person actually requested that I record it as a podcast, so here we are.

Today, I want to talk to you about the antidote to all the economic doom and gloom you might be hearing in the news, on social media, or in conversations all around you. If you’re looking for some way to turn things around, this episode should help.

Let’s dive in.

As we are subjected to more economic ‘doom and gloom’ messaging consistently right now, I wanted to share an out-of-the-usual podcast episode.

Firstly, I want to acknowledge that ‘economic pressure’ looks REALLY different, for people in different financial situations. When you’re struggling to cover your bills, or neck-deep in debt trying to survive… seeing people whinge about their multi-million dollar investment portfolio losing value can cause major eye-roll.

So take what you need, and leave what you don’t. And remember to be kind to others, and most importantly – to yourself.

If you’re doing it tough financially:

Financial insecurity and crisis can do a real number on your nervous system.  This can mean you’re unable to sleep, unable to think, unable to focus, and unable to work your way out of it… you’re locked in fight, flight, freeze, fawn.

It is sooooo common to hear people lost in a fog of self-blame at times like this. Frustration that you didn’t save more, charge more, sell more, grow more when you had the chance in the past. There’s also a tendency to be caught up thinking about the future – living in the dream life in your head, when you won’t have to worry about this anymore. When YOU can be the one grumbling about the markets, and your investment portfolio.

Here’s the thing:

In both cases, you’re not being present – you’re either focusing on the past, or the future. But guess where you are? You are right here, right now.

It doesn’t serve you right now to be mean to yourself, treat yourself poorly, or get caught in a cycle of blame (self or others).

If you’re in a cycle of self-blame:

Let me be 100% clear:

  • You did not ‘manifest’ this situation, nor is this a time for self-blame.
  • You have not created this pressure, simply because you have a ‘lack’ mindset.

Times of economic pressure are often the most fruitful for get-rich-quick schemes and sellers who don’t always have your best interests at heart.

That is NOT a coincidence.

Just as importantly, it might also feel like every second is critical and there’s NO TIME to waste on things like rest, reflection, regulation, or planning. Taking time to regulate your nervous system, look after your physical and mental wellbeing, and get a clear head is often the BEST way to assess your situation, get clear on your strategy, and then start taking action.

I’ve got some practical strategies (below) – but I wanted to talk about getting centred first, because it makes a world of difference to your effectiveness in decision-making and implementation.

I want you to pay attention to your thoughts and feelings:

  • Are you scrolling socials hoping to find a saviour?
  • Are you living in the past, or the future rather than being present?
  • Are you treating yourself well, or falling into self-blame and criticism?
  • What is the kindest, most loving way you could support and mentor yourself through this situation? (Trust me – that’s actually the smartest way to do it)

YES – You are an entrepreneur, and you can create financial security and stability.
YES – There are epic strategies available to you to recession-proof your business and personal finances.
YES – There’s a big difference in how you approach these challenges when you’re in a great headspace and feeling positive… so it is important to work on your mindset.

BUT … white-knuckling your way through it with frustration and fear, blaming yourself for being in this situation and getting cranky at yourself if something doesn’t work overnight is NOT the solution. Okay?

Be kind to yourself, that’s the FIRST RULE when navigating tough times.

If you want to bring in a short-term cash injection:

My key pieces of advice at this time are this:

  1. Remember that the people MOST likely to buy from you are your hottest audience, not strangers on the internet.
  2. In most businesses, it’s actually easier to sell a high-ticket offer to a handful of people, than it is to sell a low-ticket offer to hundreds of people.
  3. There’s a huge temptation to believe that no-one has money, no-one can afford to buy from you, no-one is interested… especially when YOU are struggling to make ends meet, but it can be absolutely derailing to the exact thing you want to grow – income.
  4. When there’s economic pressure, your value proposition and messaging are critical – ensure you are clearly articulating why you, why this, and why now for the people within your niche who are hungry for a solution, and motivated to invest and implement quickly.

If you’re feeling like you have to do it alone:

Above all else – I want to remind you that I’m here for you.
Not just as a business mentor who wants to sell to you.  (I’m open to that, of course!)

But also as a peer, who wants to support you.

Even if you NEVER spend a cent with me… my podcast, free resources, emails, social media… it’s all there for you to access, and to support you with practical strategies, ideas, advice and support.

Our community is here for you too. Don’t shy away and self-isolate – lean in. A problem shared is a problem halved. We are stronger together, and there are ways we can support each other through these challenges – not just cheering each other on, not just ideas and support, but practical ways as well.

Remember: The fastest way to experience a feeling is to give it to someone else.
