Today’s episode of the Heart-Centred Business Podcast started as a reply to a question I received after episode 507—the one where I talked about niching and said, “Stop making it about yourself, you’re not the main character.” After that, someone messaged me asking, “But Tash, don’t I actually need a bit of main character energy in my business? Shouldn’t I be stepping more into the spotlight?”
I loved that question so much, I knew we had to dig into it. So let’s talk about what main character energy really is in business, and where you absolutely should—and shouldn’t—lean into it.
Do you need a bit more main character energy? Let’s find it!

When Should You Embrace Main Character Energy?
You might be surprised to hear me say this, but: absolutely yes, I want you to embrace main character energy. I want you to step into the spotlight, as often and as proudly as possible… when it comes to your story.
Let me explain. In episode 507, I talked about niching and why it’s not about you. When you’re making decisions about your niche, your messaging, and your sales pages, it needs to focus on your ideal client. You are the guide, not the main character of that story. Your audience—the people you serve—are the heroes.
But that doesn’t mean everything in your business is about them and you somehow disappear. Quite the opposite.
In an era of AI-generated content and faceless accounts, it’s more important than ever that we know who you are. I want to see your face and know your name. I want signs of life—proof that there’s a real human behind the business. So yes, there are spaces where you need to dial up the main character energy. It’s all about context.
Where to Own Your Main Character Energy
1. Your Presence Matters
If I visit someone’s website or social platform and I can’t see them or even find their name, I instantly feel a disconnect—especially now when AI bots and fake businesses abound. People need to see YOU are the person behind your offers, content, and brand.
Be present in your business: show your face, share your name, reply to comments and emails, and let your energy shine through your content. Give your audience those “signs of life” that only you can bring. I’d rather see you post what you had for lunch than be left guessing if your content is real or machine-generated. You showing up as yourself is not just refreshing; it’s imperative.
2. Choosing Yourself—Stop Waiting to Be Picked
Let’s talk about “pick me” energy versus main character energy. If you sit around waiting for someone to tell you to write a book, create a course, or pursue a dream, you’re giving away your power.
Don’t wait for external permission. If you want speaking gigs, host your own webinar. Want to write a book? Don’t wait for a deal; write anyway. Main characters create their own opportunities. They choose themselves, and by doing so, they open the door for others to notice and want in on what they’re doing.
If you want to be a writer, start writing. If you want to be on stage, speak. If you want to be heard, put your work out into the world. Main character energy is about making things happen for yourself, instead of hoping to be chosen by someone else.
3. Building Self-Belief and Mindset
You have to love yourself hard to run a business, especially one that’s heart-centred. If you don’t think you’re good enough, or you doubt that anyone will want your help, business is going to feel ten times harder.
Main characters dig themselves. Even if it’s the “klutzy hot mess” heroine in a romcom—she still has a seed of self-worth. So if you’re not feeling that self-belief right now, it’s time to work on it. We’ve been conditioned—especially as women—to think you shouldn’t “love yourself too much.” But in reality, successful business owners are their own cheerleaders.
If you’re not your own biggest fan, start working on it today. The only vapid, self-involved narrative here is the false one that says self-love is a flaw.
4. Leading When You’re a Learner or Participant
This is a big one people overlook. If you join a course, program, or community, don’t shrink away. Show up with main character energy by being an active, generous, kind leader—even when you’re not the host.
Think about the people whose names you remember in your favourite communities or group programs. Those folks are the ones who show up, encourage others, ask helpful questions, and bring people into the conversation. They aren’t trying to steal the spotlight from the facilitator—they create a nurturing, empowering environment for everyone.
When you show up with that type of leadership, you become memorable—and people will refer others to you, ask you questions, and engage more. You’ll be the name people remember, which is gold for building your audience and business.
Direct Your Main Character Energy for Greater Impact
Sometimes, just realising you’ve been putting all your “main character” focus into the wrong places, like niching or core messaging (which should be about your client), and redirecting those energies to your presence, your mindset, and your leadership makes all the difference.
When you focus your energy where it actually helps you grow—showing up boldly, believing in yourself, making your own opportunities, and lifting others as you learn—you get the best of both worlds.
Practice Makes Progress
If stepping into main character energy in a certain group or space feels massive or scary, find a smaller, safer space to practise. Maybe it’s a small mastermind, a private group, or a breakout session. Start there and build up your confidence.
Chances are, even just from listening to this, you can already spot places where dialing up your main character energy would be powerful. Give yourself that gift. Play and experiment. See what it feels like when you let yourself be the star of your story.
