If you’re feeling frustrated with your social media experience right now, you’re definitely not alone. I’ve been there too! If you’ve noticed your Facebook or Instagram feed is full of stuff you don’t care about, or you can’t find posts from the people and businesses you actually want to connect with, this episode is for you. I spent the past few months on a mission: I wanted to consciously begin healing my algorithm and bring the joy back to my social experience. And guess what? It’s working! Here’s exactly what I did (and what you can try too).
And because this is a #Tashmas episode of the podcast, I have a gift for you at the end of today’s episode.
Wait… What is #Tashmas?
I do it for both my birthday (1-12 March) and pre-Christmas (1-12 December) every year! Every day from now until my birthday on 12th March, there will be a new daily podcast episode, with a hot tip or practical strategy as per usual… but you ALSO get a gift! I love sharing the birthday vibes, and what better way to do that?! The daily gift could be a freebie, a special offer, a competition… but there will be something for YOU every single day.
Let’s dive in…

Why I Decided to Fix My Feed
It’s such a common struggle: business owners complaining that the algorithm is keeping them from reaching their audience, and even as users, it feels like your feed is cluttered with content you didn’t sign up for. I was tired of scrolling endlessly, only to see ads, suggested posts, or bland content, hardly ever real updates from the people and communities I care about.
So, at the start of 2026, I decided to be the change. I wanted to create a feed that actually felt good for me, and at the same time, help more small businesses and new creators get seen—because it’s tough for them to get organic reach these days. My goal: follow and engage with businesses I genuinely like, and intentionally shape my feed to be inspiring and useful.
Facebook: Three Key Changes I Made
1. Using Facebook as My Page—Not Just My Profile
I used to always browse Facebook as my personal profile, mixing updates from friends with business content. But it got to the point where my personal feed was almost all ads or suggested content, with only one in every five or six posts actually coming from someone or a page I followed.
So I switched things up. Now, I log in on my computer and use Facebook as my business page. I actively find and follow pages from my business page, not my profile. When I scroll this feed, I hardly see any ads or random suggestions—just actual updates from groups and pages I follow. I LOVE it!
2. Regular, Purposeful Engagement
I set aside three times a week, just 15 to 20 minutes each, to scroll through my Facebook page feed. I engage intentionally: like, comment, share, put posts in my stories, click on links—anything that shows Facebook which pages and posts I want more of. I do this consistently, and it feels so much more uplifting.
3. “Not Interested” = Boundaries & Training the Algorithm
Anytime I get rage-baited, click-baited, or notice a post that drags my mood down, I hit those three dots and select “not interested.” Then I close the window; that’s my cue to step away. I don’t want Facebook to show me more of that stuff, so I’m quick to give it feedback when something’s not for me. In just a few months, my feed quality improved dramatically—I see more positive, helpful posts, more from groups and businesses I care about, and almost none of those mindless, annoying B-roll videos.
(A quick note on B-roll videos: You know those pointless videos where someone just sips tea and the “real” content is buried in the caption? I don’t enjoy those at all—they’re just scroll stoppers designed to get engagement, not actually help. So now, any time they pop up, I let Facebook know I’m not interested. And now, I barely see them!)
A Bonus: My Personal Feed is Improving Too
Here’s something wild—since I started being more intentional on my business page, my personal profile feed has started getting better too. It still shows more ads and suggested posts, but it’s becoming more relevant. I’m now putting in a bit of time each week to train that feed specifically, mostly by showing Facebook I want more group content and unfollowing pages that don’t light me up.
Instagram: Mindful Following, Mindful Engagement
The same ideas apply over on Instagram, but I’ve gotten a bit pickier. I really love static image posts, carousels, and honest captions. So I focus my engagement on those—quick tips, monthly book lists, helpful advice.
If I find someone is using lots of B-roll videos, AI-generated captions or imagery, or if I get a bot reply (hello, ManyChat!) just for commenting something normal, I’ll go ahead and unfollow. I’m here for real connection with real people. I want to see photos of your feet, your handwriting, your face—actual human stuff. No shade to those using automation or AI, it’s just not my thing!
If I genuinely love a piece of content, I don’t just hit like—I’ll repost, comment, and share the love. When I find new people in comment threads and their profile vibes with me, I’ll give them a follow too. But I make sure I’m following people who feel real, share a mix of content, and aren’t just churning out Reels or bot content.
The Results: More Joyful, Community-Focused Social Media
Here’s what’s changed:
- On Facebook, 90% of what I see now as my page is from people and pages I care about.
- My personal profile feed is getting better. I’ll keep you posted on how it changes as I keep curating.
- On Instagram, I feel like I’m actually connecting and having more human interactions.
- I spend less time mindlessly scrolling, more time actually enjoying the communities I’m part of.
