Why Sales Always Felt Awkward to Me

Let me be real with you – sales conversations used to make me straight up uncomfortable. Whenever I felt like I was “selling at” someone, or pitching to a friend without knowing how they’d receive it, my body would literally react. I used to get a red rash that started in my cleavage and spread all the way up my neck and face during early sales calls, especially those first few months in business. It was so distracting – I was on video calls, watching this rash go wild, all because I was so uncomfortable with sales. It’s funny now, but back then, it was mortifying.

You might think I’ve always been comfortable selling, but the truth is, it’s been a learning curve. I still get those awkward feelings, but over time, I’ve designed my own strategy to keep the discomfort at bay.

Why Selling to Friends (and Anyone) Doesn’t Have to Be Awkward

Here’s the deal: most advice says your early sales will come from your network. For service-based businesses, this is especially true. But I hear from so many business owners who are either way too pushy (spamming strangers and sliding into DMs) or so terrified of being “salesy” that they barely mention what they actually do to people they know. I call this the “big gap” – jumping from blasting dozens of uncomfortable pitches to hiding your business from everyone who isn’t already a client.

The truth is, it doesn’t have to be either of those extremes. And to sell to friends without it being awkward, you need to find the middle ground.

My Number One Principle: Consent-Based Marketing Is Everything

I never pitch to anyone – friend, family, stranger – unless I’m pretty sure they actually want to hear it. This is all about consent-based marketing in action. But don’t misunderstand: that doesn’t mean I just sit and wait for someone to ask. In fact, when someone just says, “Okay, give me a sales pitch,” I get even more awkward. What actually works is figuring out if someone is interested first, and then making the invitation.

If your sales strategy depends on waiting for people to directly ask for work, you’re putting your business on pause. My job, as the marketer and business owner, is to collect information, ask questions, and figure out where someone is at.

Asking for Permission – But Not in a Weird Way

You might be wondering, “Do I just message all my friends and ask if they want me to sell to them?” That still feels awkward. Imagine reaching out to your closest friend and saying, “Want to hear how I could help you as a business coach?” Even just making the ask with no lead-in feels off.

So the trick is to ask better questions before you ever get to the sales part. For example, with hot leads, I might say, “Hey, sounds like you could use some help with this. Want to hear how I could help?” But before getting there, I focus on nurture and qualifying – learning whether someone’s interested through genuine conversation.

What Doesn’t Work: The Pushy Spammy Approach

I see a lot of people who get told by coaches, “Just DM fifty people a day!” – and honestly, it’s a terrible strategy. You end up disconnected, treating people as numbers. If someone has 5,000 Facebook friends, they’re probably not “in relationship” with all those people. Adding randoms and spamming them isn’t my style, and it shouldn’t be yours either.

On the flip side, hiding what you do from friends because you’re scared of seeming salesy isn’t helping you learn sales skills, either.

Finding the Middle Ground: The Client Attraction Process

Here’s the process that’s changed everything for me, and for my clients:

Reach – Nurture – Invite – Convert

A lot of people miss the middle bits: nurturing relationships and knowing how to invite people to hear your offer. They might have zero discomfort posting a business update on their profile, but when it’s time to actually offer an invitation to a specific person, they freeze up.

If I asked, “Who in your network might consider your retreat offer?” most people have no idea. The big gap is in those one-on-one nurture and invite steps.

The Real Magic – Qualifying Questions and Genuine Connection

The key to sell to friends (or anyone) without awkwardness? Learn how to qualify and nurture. For example, when chatting with someone, I ask things like, “What’s your income goal for the next three months?” or “What are you focused on selling?” Their answers tell me what support they need, what offer fits best, and whether we’re aligned. Sometimes, I find out they’re not ready or that a different strategy is better.

This approach takes practice! Early in my business, I’d offer free coaching sessions to creative friends – like one friend who sold jewelry at markets. I reached out, told her what I was doing, and offered a couple of free sessions to see if social media could help her sales. We worked together, and at the end, I asked qualifying questions: What did she think of our work? What did she want to do next? She said she wanted to set up an online shop and make direct sales. That was my cue to say, “I can help you with that, want me to tell you how?” She said yes – and bought a $1,000 coaching package!

What I learned: Free coaching for strangers didn’t convert as well. They didn’t show up, or they just wanted free advice. Charging a small fee, or nurturing in DMs and comments (rather than calls), worked better and attracted more qualified leads.

Scaling Up: One to One, Then One to Many

The more I practiced nurturing and qualifying one-on-one, the easier it became to do the same at scale. My free content – blog posts, emails, resources – started to echo the advice and support that resonated most in those individual conversations. High connection at first, then scaling up with clarity and purpose.

Why Choosing Discomfort Actually Works

Sending that message to my friend offering help was uncomfortable – because she could have said no. But that discomfort is way better than blindly spamming or feeling sleazy. I chose the discomfort that taught me how to qualify, nurture, and invite authentically. It’s what lets me sell without feeling like I’m pushing my business on people or making things weird.

If you’re drawing a hard line and never selling to friends, you might be missing the pathway to real, effective sales skills, better messaging, and stronger connections inside your network.
