Not everyone in the room is your ideal client

First things first: Whether you’re speaking at an event or guesting on someone’s podcast, not every person in the audience is your ideal client.

It’s easy to think that everyone should become a follower or buy something from you for the gig to be a success. But that’s not the case. Focus on attracting the right people into your business out of that crowd. Identify what makes someone an ideal client for you and aim to bring the right people into your audience, rather than all of them.

The more specific you are about what makes someone a good fit for your business, the more you can tailor your presentation to resonate with them.

Your priority: Get them on your list

Your main goal from any speaking engagement should be to get people onto your mailing list. It’s the best way to build relationships, trust, and eventually, sales. Instead of trying to sell from the stage, focus on getting people interested enough to want to hear more from you. Give yourself a chance to welcome them into your audience and build a relationship before diving into a sales pitch.

Not only will that convert more people into buyers over time, you maximise your connections from the event.

Offer a free resource that they can opt into, which brings them onto your mailing list and gives you the chance to continue the conversation later.

Building Connections

After the event, take the time to truly connect with people. Get to know participants, other speakers, and the event organizers. When we focus on building genuine relationships, it’s not just about what we gain, but also contributing to the success of the whole event. The organizers might assume you just want to do your thing and leave, but staying active and engaged can be enriching for everyone.

Participate in pre-event fun and promotions

Be an active champion of the event, using hashtags, and sharing your involvement beforehand. It helps to get people excited and increases visibility for you and the event. It’s mutually beneficial; you demonstrate that you’re a sought-after speaker, and it aids in reaching more people. Even if there’s nothing financial in it for you, engaging more passionately with the event pays off in other ways.

Share follow-up content and keep connecting

Don’t stop once the event is over! Create content based on what you learned and your experiences. Share insights from the event through your social media. This not only helps attendees remember your presentation but also nurtures those who didn’t attend. It’s a brilliant way to provide valuable content and keep the conversation going with your audience.

Nurture your audience!

Continue building relationships with your audience, especially new contacts from your speaking gig. Consistent communication through emails, DMs, and social content is key. Use these channels to invite interaction, which helps in understanding your audience better and fostering relationships that lead to sales.
