Waitlists – Versatile and Validating
When you’ve got an idea for a new offer, whether it be for a service, a product, a course, or a membership, it can be tempting to dive straight into creating it and offering it to your audience. But… setting up a waitlist first could be a better strategy for you. But it’s not just for new offers! In this episode, I outline five reasons to try waitlists – I’m not sharing how, but I have a previous episode with the ‘how’ – click here.
1. Validate first
The first reason is it validates the interest in an offer before building it. It checks whether the topic interests your audience, if the delivery model is appealing, and how much value people place on the transformation you’re offering. It’s particularly important for new group offerings—to ensure hitting minimum viable numbers. Setting up a waitlist gauges initial interest and excitement, confirming you have basics covered.
2. Generate hot leads
The second reason is generating hot leads, which not only validates but gives practical insights. Most waitlists convert at about 15 to 20% for group programs and memberships. Though there are exceptions and many factors, it gives a good indication of likely initial sales results, and you gain leads most likely to buy.
3. Smooth the launch roller-coaster
The third reason is easing the launch roller coaster feeling. With a waitlist ready to buy, you can open doors to them before the public. This smooths the highs and lows of launching by avoiding the anxiety of waiting for sales from launch events and starting in a space of abundance with some sales already in.
4. Protect capacity without closing off completely
Fourthly, a waitlist is beneficial when nearing capacity. Many service providers quickly jump to group programs when worried about being too booked up instead of creating a waitlist for future one-on-one clients. A waitlist reassures continuous demand, enabling price adjustments. You have options to offer existing prices to waitlisted clients first, easing mindset pressure around taking every interested client.
5. Capture and grow demand between launches
The fifth reason is between program launches. Closing and reopening doors can convince fence-sitters to act. During closed periods, you’re still growing your list, and interested people join the waitlist. This builds momentum for more sales when you reopen.
If those five reasons aren’t enough, I also have a previous podcast episode discussing waitlists in more detail about validation strategies, which you can find at tashcorbin.com/416.
