Whether you’re seasoned in business or just starting out, I bet you’d love a few more referrals, right? Referrals can make a massive difference to your business bottom line. When you’re new in business, they’re often the most reliable way to find those first precious clients.
But here’s a question: Do you have a real strategy to get more referrals? Most people never really set something up, or they don’t do much more than a little nudge here and there. I want to share my absolute favourite referral strategy for high-ticket clients—it worked wonders, especially when I was starting out, and it’s still something I come back to.
Let’s dive in!

Let’s get clear: Referrals are getting even more important with all the fake reviews and AI-generated nonsense out there. People are skeptical these days—who can you trust online when people buy fake reviews or whole fake Reddit threads get set up to discredit or boost providers? It wasn’t always this bad, but it was happening even back when I started running my business in 2013, and it’s only ramped up since then.
What’s different now is that people want recommendations from those they actually know. When someone you trust recommends a service provider, you’re way more likely to listen. A real referral from your own network cuts through that skepticism fast—and that’s what makes a referral the quickest path to converting a lead into a client.
How Referrals Fast-Track Conversion
Referrals are powerful because they fast-track what I call KLTC: Know, Like, Trust, Connection. You might have heard of KLT before—know, like, and trust—but I add connection because it’s that sense of being “only one degree away.” If your friend works with me, you now feel connected to me too. That’s powerful. It makes people more likely to join your list, hop on a call, and—most importantly—actually pay for your services.
Referrals speed up connection, boost conversion rates, and even work as a recession-proof strategy for your business. When I first started out, most of my early clients came from referrals. Yet for some reason, most people have no solid referral strategy in place—they just hope for the best.
So, why aren’t more business owners focused on referrals? Often, it feels out of our control—you can’t make someone refer you. Some people stick with little nudges, like mentioning it in a newsletter or on socials: “Hey, tag someone who might need this,” or, “Forward to your friends.” That’s better than nothing, but honestly? There’s so much more you can do.
The Pitfalls of Paying for Referrals
Here’s where lots of people get stuck: thinking the only way to drive referrals is to pay for them. And trust me, I’ve learned the hard way—paying for referrals or starting affiliate programs is actually one of the quickest ways to kill referrals. When money gets involved, people have to disclose it to their friends (in some countries, it’s even a legal requirement). Suddenly, your clients overthink: “Am I referring my friend because this service is amazing, or because I want the cash?”
I’ve seen this play out in real life. There was this one joint venture business selling a $15k service. The service was honestly terrible—my clients would come to me for help cleaning up the mess. But that service paid a 50% referral fee. So even when my clients hated it, they still referred people just so they could make back what they’d lost. That kind of referral isn’t good for anyone—your clients feel out of integrity, and the new client might end up disappointed too.
I wanted something that was easy and had none of that awkward, money-driven mess. That’s why I landed on my favourite strategy.
The End-of-Session Gift: My Go-To Referral Strategy
Early on, I tried to use free coaching sessions as a lead magnet: “Hey, grab a session, no strings attached!” Guess what? That didn’t really work. A lot of people didn’t even show up—maybe a 60 to 70% show rate at best. Those who did come often seemed guarded or assumed it would be a sales pitch. Some even started the call by telling me, “Just so you know, I’m not buying anything.”
That wasn’t the vibe I wanted for the start of a working relationship. I still wanted to give value—practice my coaching, help people, and of course, generate leads. So I switched gears. Instead of offering free sessions to the public, I charged for an initial session (like a 2-hour session at a discounted rate). I found this worked better. People turned up invested, ready to share, and willing to do the work.
But I missed the idea of giving something truly valuable. That’s when I started this: At the end of a client’s first or second paid session, I’d offer a special opportunity. “As a paying client, you can gift a free coaching session to up to three friends.” This wasn’t a public offer. It was invitation-only, limited, and genuine.
People love gifting when it’s special or exclusive. At this early stage, my clients were excited—they’d already had insights and quick wins. They were eager to share the experience with others. And because there was no money involved (and no pressure for their friends to buy), it felt good on both sides.
Here’s what happened: The friends who got the gifted sessions? They showed up present, engaged, and ready to participate. There was trust—because their friend had vouched for me. The sessions felt relaxed, not salesy. There was no expectation or pressure, but the connection was there.
And the conversion? Around 80%—those gifted sessions brought in seriously aligned clients, ready to buy the same package their friend had, or jump into some other offer. It just worked.
Why This Strategy Works So Well
I noticed something powerful doing this. Instead of my clients trying to “sell” my services for me, I got to meet their friends, get to know them, and deliver massive value. If they were a fit, we’d keep working together. I was always better at selling my work than my clients could be—and having someone show up thanks to a genuine recommendation made for a strong, trust-filled first contact.
Plus, by having the free sessions as a “gift” right after those first sessions, clients were still in the excitement and momentum phase. They’d often had big wins, they were feeling the benefit, and they were happy to pass that on. It wasn’t after months of fatigue or resistance—it was right in the glow of their recent breakthrough.
And I put simple boundaries around it. Maybe three sessions to gift, and they had to be claimed by the end of our package. No complicated set-up. No vouchers or codes. I just told them: “If you want to gift a session, tell your friend to email me, mention your name, and I’ll take care of the rest.” Easy.
If I ever wanted to ramp up lead generation (say there was a quiet spell), I’d reach out to my last few clients and offer them another session to gift. Simple, personal, and immediate.
To close the feedback loop, I always thanked clients for their referrals. Next time we spoke, I’d let them know, “Thanks for sending Jane my way—we had an amazing session!” It made my clients feel great for helping a friend.
No money changed hands. No weird feelings, no awkwardness, just genuine connection and value all around.
When and How I Still Use It
These days, with my business more established, I don’t rely on this as much for lead generation. Plenty of clients refer people to my resources or my podcast instead, and those work great to nurture new leads. But even now, if someone tells me, “My friend really needs to work with you,” I’ll still offer a special free session, gifted through the client. It works, even now—just a few months ago, I gained a wonderful new client this way.
I don’t use it as often simply because my one-on-one time is more limited and I’m not focused on filling my calendar with paid sessions like I once was. But if you’re at that early stage, or you want to build momentum, this is a zero-tech, zero-hassle way to create high-quality referrals fast.
What Makes This Strategy So Effective
You only need one client to get started—just one. Let them gift free sessions to a few friends, and you can exponentially grow your client base without spending a cent.
No complicated affiliate systems, no tracking payouts, and absolutely zero risk of “icky” sales tactics. Clients aren’t worried about referring for the wrong reasons, because it’s not about money. It’s about sharing something valuable.
I tried affiliate programs twice. Both times, overall referrals in my business dropped. Less sharing, less enthusiasm—it just didn’t vibe with the heart-centred, connected business I wanted to build. People now are very wary of financial schemes behind recommendations, and honestly? The magic’s in the authentic, generous invitation.
So if you want to give it a go, tweak it for your own service, your own niche, your own capacity. If you need boundaries or legal tweaks, great. Make it yours. Just know: People don’t always need to be paid to refer you. Sometimes, that’s the thing that dries up referrals fastest!
