Why Simple Works (And Why We Overcomplicate Everything)
I spend a LOT of time talking about strategy with clients—inside my group programs, on retreats, in social media DMs, or one-to-one with my VIPs. And something I’m hearing a lot at the moment is, “I just need to get everything sorted before I…” (fill in the blank: launch, sell, send the proposal, pitch the offer).
I have a bit of a superpower for cutting through the noise and getting laser-focused on what actually matters. It’s not about being harsh or bossy—actually, a lot of it comes from my self-confessed laziness! If there’s a way to get results without busywork, I’ll find it. I’m ambitious and lazy, which, trust me, is a magic combo when it comes to making things happen with less effort.
But here’s what I’ve noticed recently: the simple strategies are suddenly much, much harder for people to execute. Even when I cut the fluff and give clients a clear, doable plan… something gets in the way. People get stuck on all the “shoulds” and “maybes”—and convince themselves they have to do a thousand other things before doing the thing that actually matters.
Spotting the “Advanced” Procrastination Tactics
I see business owners tying themselves in knots, finding side quests and adventures instead of focusing on their core strategy. These are the folks who redesign their website for the tenth time, set up automations for offers they’ve never sold, or spend weeks mapping out a whole client journey before securing their first sale.
I call this “advanced” procrastination—not because it’s fancier than regular putting-things-off, but because it’s procrastination in disguise. It looks like organising, simplifying, or preparing. It even feels productive. But really? It’s just another way of hiding from the scary stuff that brings big results.
Quick story: In Kickstart this year, I was super clear with participants—no more “oh, but I want to…” conversations or pushing the money-making actions lower on the list. When someone said, “I’ll do that right after I finish my new content plan,” I said, “Yes, and let’s also get you making money right now.” And wow, the results were SO much bigger and faster. When you just do the income-producing thing FIRST, everything else falls into place.
The Real Cost of Hiding from Core Strategy
Let’s talk about all the ways this shows up. Maybe you’ve heard (or told yourself):
- I need a new brand before I can raise my prices.
- I have to finish the client onboarding automation because what if I get too many clients?
- I’ll reach out to those leads after I organise my offers… and rewrite my copy… and revamp my Instagram.
One VIP client delayed our sessions for months because she kept saying, “I just need to finish this one thing” (again and again). Eventually, I had to remind her the sessions were expiring. When she finally showed up, she admitted: the work wasn’t getting done because she was scared. Deep down, she was just stuck in perfectionism—all-or-nothing thinking—when actually, the next simple step was right in front of her.
Your business doesn’t grow from having a fancier website, a prettied-up sales page, or a hyperstreamlined onboarding process. The truth? Most of us could be making money with the bare minimum if we’d just focus.
Why Do We Do This to Ourselves?
Let’s get honest. Advanced procrastination is often fueled by stories in our head:
- “If I don’t look ‘high-ticket,’ I can’t be high-ticket.”
- “If my client funnels aren’t perfect, people won’t take me seriously.”
- “I need All The Ducks In a Row before I show up and sell.”
But in reality, you could be telling people about your service while you tinker with your branding. You could be following up with hot leads while you’re sketching out a new logo. You can get paid before everything’s “ready.”
I once watched someone spend weeks building automations for a package they’d never sold. We counted it out—she was worried about sending six invoices (that would take her a grand total of 90 minutes). She delayed pitching her offer for months because she was “not ready.” That’s advanced procrastination in action.
How to Flip the Script (And Why It Matters More Today Than Ever)
Here’s why this matters. We now have so many options—so many marketing platforms, software, strategies—that it’s easy to convince ourselves we just haven’t found “the thing.” A decade ago, if you wanted an online business, you pretty much started selling one-to-one, low-tech, high-trust offers. If it wasn’t working, it was usually a mindset block, not a strategy gap.
Today, when you feel stuck, you can spend months buying courses, building lead magnets, rebranding, automating—or jumping from Facebook to Instagram to TikTok instead of facing the real work. The options themselves have become a distraction. Instead of confronting mindset or clarity issues, we keep ourselves “busy” instead of productive.
You Are Worthy—Right Now
Here’s what no one really says: You are worthy of making money with what you’ve got, right now. You don’t need a new logo, a three-tiered funnel, or a 54-step onboarding workflow. You don’t need to redesign everything before making sales, building an audience, or raising your rates. A great mentor doesn’t give you a longer to-do list—they help you focus down to what really matters.
If you want to remember just one thing from this podcast, let it be this:
You are worthy of making sales and attracting leads before everything is perfect. You are allowed to make money now, not after a big overhaul or complicated strategy. The fastest way to grow is to get really clear on your minimum viable product, your minimum viable sales and marketing plan, and DO THAT.
Next time you’re tempted by a side quest—one more tweak, one more automation, one more checklist—pause and ask: “Is this moving me toward real results, or is it just keeping me busy?”
You and your business are ready right now. Ditch the endless to-do list, stop hiding behind complexity, and focus on what pays the bills and creates the biggest impact.
