So many algorithm rules and guidelines!
Now, there seems to be a growing list of rules, tips, and strategies you need to follow just to have any hope of reaching people on social media. We need to keep the algorithms on our side—don’t put links in your post, don’t use the word free. It can feel like the algorithm is a cranky boss you must appease, leading many to become algorithm minions. They try to follow every rule yet still face challenges. The concept of being an algorithm minion is driven by fear—people believe if they don’t follow every rule, they’ll be penalised.
It’s exhausting to keep up!
Is there another way to engage with algorithms? Yes, and that’s making the algorithm your bestie. When you view it this way, it changes your mindset and the way you interact on social media. As a bestie, you can be yourself and show up fully because the algorithm will love you for it. You don’t need to stay on top of every new rule or trend. By knowing what makes the algorithm tick fundamentally, you can have a symbiotic relationship where you both benefit.
What is the algorithm’s job?
The algorithm’s core job is to show content to people who want to see it. Trying to trick the algorithm won’t support a genuine connection. When your content genuinely engages your audience, the algorithm shows it to more people. That has been the algorithm’s job from the beginning and remains unchanged.
Tough love moment
If your post only reaches 25 out of 300 followers without engagement, it’s not the algorithm’s fault. It’s working correctly by showing your content to those most likely to engage, but they didn’t. Your job is to create engaging content, not to trick the algorithm. Focus on creating content that your audience can’t help but engage with. The algorithm will reward this genuine connection.
Stop trying to trick the algorithm
There’s so much rhetoric advising algorithm bypassing for broader content spread. But if your audience dislikes content, does it matter how many see it? I argue you’re training the algorithm that no one wants it, so make sure the audience values the content. It’s not about tricking the algorithm. Early businesses spend too much time and energy trying to optimise their social media, but honestly that’s a one percenter in your strategy.
A new way: Algorithm Bestie!
It’s time to stop being minions, and turn your relationship with the algorithm around – it’s time to be besties. Be mindful of how your social media strategy fits into your overall business results and growth approach. For many, chasing strangers isn’t effective time use, and instead engaging existing audiences is a more important priority.
Don’t trick audiences, or try to deceive them into engaging. Create content your existing audience engages with, loves, and finds compelling.
Top notch content
Focus on creating content that truly teaches, connects, and provides value – that’s what generates epic engagement. Help the algorithm to understand that your audience loves your content, regardless of whether it follows those wild rules you’re being taught. If you train the algorithm that your audience engages well with your posts that include links, you won’t be as penalised for including links. If you train the algorithm that your audience is excited by your content regardless, your reach will consistently grow compared to people who use the tricks and need to keep up with the changing rules and guidelines.
Consider what kind of content you engage with— what does it look like? What does it do? it likely educates, inspires, or connects on a personal level. Your audience wants the same. Rather than making every post look like an ad, focus on being real and authentic.
Remember, social media’s purpose is connection; the algorithm’s job is to put great content in front of people who will love it.
