The energy of a fresh start
I totally get that the New Year is just another day on the calendar and isn’t really some magical phenomenon.
But… you have to admit that there’s something about starting fresh that gives us so much energy and motivation. Many people take time off around the holidays, and with all the messages of new beginnings around us, it’s like we all get into this fresh motivation. The first of the first… it has quite a ring to it. And that energy makes a difference to me.
In our Heart-Centred Business Planning system and program, I see the difference in people’s energy at the start of the year compared to later. There’s a BIG difference between the energy of our Quarter 1 planning, compared to our Quarter 4 planning.
So, while we could dismiss the New Year hype, there’s real power in using that burst of fresh energy strategically.
Kickstart your business: 5 Practical Strategies
So, how do you create momentum for your business at the start of the year? Importantly, these are for YOUR start to the year, not necessarily from 1 January. If you’re not starting back until the kids are back at school, then map your plan accordingly (see Kickstart Strategy 1).
Here are my top five ways that I ensure I start the year strong, and kickstart my RESULTS:
Kickstart 1: Be clear on your start date and protect it
Decide when you’ll be back to work and stick to it.
Be honest about when you’re actually going to be ready to dive in. Then, protect that date. Even if you’re feeling itchy to be back at work, be mindful about cutting your break short. Be considered about why you’re feeling itchy. You can even create some external accountability like telling your audience or setting up a coworking date with a business bestie to protect that time out.
For me, my first day back isn’t public-facing. It’s all about getting my own ducks in a row before committing to being ‘back’ properly in my business.
Kickstart 2: Schedule dedicated planning and action time in your first 4 weeks
Block out time in your first four weeks for working on, not just in, your business. This includes CEO time, strategic planning, and content setup.
One thing that works really well for me is blocking out time for my business after helping others. For example, after facilitating planning sessions, I block out two hours for my own planning because I know that’s when I’m buzzing with ideas. I also schedule coworking sessions with biz buddies consistently in Jan and Feb for even more focus.
A new tradition that started just 2 years ago is that I go on a solo retreat, even if it’s just for a couple of days, at the end of January. By the time the end of January arrives, I have usually been back on deck for 3 weeks, and it’s great to have dedicated time to implement important projects, batch content, and be strategic about how I invest my time.
Kickstart 3: Decide on your overall strategy and first actions
Be clear on your strategy for the first quarter and prioritise the FIRST FEW actions to make it happen. Don’t get caught up in mapping out the detail for every project, every idea, and every strategy. Start with your first actions.
or instance, if webinars are your focus, decide your first steps—whether it’s setting up systems, drafting emails, or hiring help. Identify your strategy, what you need to do first, and get those steps underway. Trust that the rest will unfold as you move closer to it, and ensure you have consistent CEO time in your calendar to set the next steps when you’re ready.
All in all, it’s better to know the BIG picture, and the first steps towards your goals, then get caught up in the weeds of the details, and feel overwhelmed.
Kickstart 4: Avoid front-loading
Now it doesn’t matter how much I bang on about front-loading, people still do it to some extent. SO BANG ON SOME MORE I SHALL!!!
Front-loading is the phenomenon where you come up with 16 projects for all of the year, but somehow 14 of them MUST be done in week one. You load up the front of your plan, expecting to have this miraculous surge of productivity and perfection right as you’re starting out on your new year.
The opposite is usually true. The start to the year is a little slower, your motivation is high but your productivity is a little lower… because you have so many ideas, and there’s a little TOO much energy and excitement. It’s like kids when they arrive at a water park. They are so excited to do ALL the slides, they run from one end of the park to the other seventeen times, instead of approaching it strategically.
Try not to cram everything into January. This ‘front-loading’ leads to pressure and disappointment when things inevitably need to be pushed back. I build my quarterly plans from the end of the quarter to avoid this, so I ensure my plan is reasonable and doable over all three months of Q1.
Kickstart 5: Create (or access) the right environment
Think about the working environment in which you are the most focused and productive.
Is it a solo retreat? A mastermind group? Maybe joining a course where you get structured guidance?
I know I need a mix of coworking, talking things out, and time sitting on the floor at my magic table (I’ll talk about that another time). So I take responsibility for ensuring I have those things, especially for January. As I said earlier, I book a lot of coworking with biz besties – we start with a quick convo about our strategy, then dive into the doing.
If you want to tap into a super-productive and effective space for kickstarting your year, I have actually created a program that I run in January each year… it’s called Kickstart!
